Villagers near Exeter will have an historic referendum today over a proposed park and ride scheme.

Residents in Ide will vote on whether or not they are in favour of the £6m facility at Round Field next to the A30/A377 junction.

The poll between 4-9pm at Ide Primary School will be the first time the village has had such a vote.

It is expected to cost around £1,000 and will be paid for by parish funds.

Devon County Council’s scheme with 556 car parking spaces is intended to reduce the traffic level on Alphington Road and boost travel options.

Campaign group Save the Ide Gap fear the facility will eventually result in the village being “swallowed up” by Exeter.

Resident Ann Boyce said: “The county council’s plans to site a park and ride on Ide’s doorstep could have a far reaching impact on the village.”

The poll was demanded by ten electors at a parish meeting on March 9.

Vote proposer Peter Hayes, 66, said: “This is the only way for everyone to say how they feel. It is democracy in action and our collective voice to the county council.”

The result should be announced soon after the poll closes.
