Gallery: Plymouth Area Business Council Spring Professionals Dinner 2024

Members of the Plymouth Area Business Council (PABC) and honoured guests were welcomed to the historic and unique venue of The Mess at HMS Drake in June 2024 for the annual Spring Professionals Dinner.

Everyone looked absolutely splendid in their finery, properly befitting the grand surroundings.

Base Commander Brigadier Mike Tanner OBE ADC RM escorted some of our special guests up to the cupola at the top of The Mess before dinner to show them the views across the dockyard and the waterfront.

The group then rejoined everyone for an impressive display of precision and discipline by the RN Drum Corps. After that, the Brigadier took a ceremonial glass of port with the Drum Major and other guests.

There were so many highlights during the evening, including the delicious food and stirring, informative and entertaining speeches from our speakers, Angus Forbes and Jim McNeill.

But surely nothing could quite beat hearing memories from our very honoured guest, Suzanne Sparrow, when she proposed the toast to commemorate the D-Day operations.

Suzanne began her naval career 82 years ago, training at HMS Drake and following in her father’s footsteps. She was an eye witness on D-Day, watching American GI’s disembarking from Plymouth. And she also served her country throughout the war years.

It was an emotional moment for everyone and, quite rightly, she was given a standing ovation as she left.

Our sincere gratitude goes to our hosts, Mess President Cdr Martin Malone, and his Vice President, Lt Cdr Will Astley. Also to their team who made it all possible and provided for an unforgettable evening.

A huge thank you also to our dinner partners, Womble Bond Dickinson and Plymouth Manufacturers Group (PMG).

The PABC will be holding its 97th Quarterly Meeting on Wednesday 4 September 2024. If you are a PABC member and would like to attend, please either register here or email
